Hypnosis - Powerful Dominant Authoritarian 1950's 60's image

At one time, 'hypnosis' was regularly portrayed
in the media, and even in some early text books,
as an 'all-powerful' form of 'mind-control.'

This type of image was typical of how hypnotic 'power'
was shown to be 'all-consuming.'

More often than not, the capability to induce trance,
was shown to be in the possession of a male (dominant) figure,
who here, can be seen exerting his 'influence'
over a female (submissive) figure.

You can see, quite clearly, therefore, why there was a strong movement
to 'standardise' and regulate the use of hypnosis
as a therapeutic intervention around this time.
(1950's / 60's)

Serious therapists - who saw the genuine benefits of 'hypnosis' -
wanted to 'de-mystify and de-mythologise' this image
of 'absolute authoritarian power.'

If they were to encourage doctors and other medical professionals,
to seriously consider utilising the healing benefits of hypnotherapy,
they needed to
'get rid of its charlatan, comic book, and Hollywood movie' associations.'

However, this sort of image continued to pervade the popular media,
as did stories of villains and criminals escaping from prison,
by entrancing their guards!

And there were many tales,
presented in fiction, of
'innocents forced to carry out dastardly deeds
under the dreadful influence of hypnosis!'

Much of this 'mythology'
and indeed the 'marketing profile' of 'Stage Hypnosis' today,
emanates from some of the 'genuine phenomena' associated
with this unique state of mind.

Not least of which that 'suggestions' are frequently
'followed and obeyed absolutely and unequivocally'
- without question.

And, that, 'in-trance'
a degree of forgetfulness or 'amnesia' can be experienced.

This is fine when suggestions are positive,
and there is no need to remember all the details,
that filter through to the unconscious mind.

Successful Hypnotherapists,
do seemingly affect change in their clients,
'automatically' and 'without effort'
- as if by magic!

Great!
-if you wish to 'kick the habit'
- or completely irradicate a phobia!

Unfortunately,
the idea of
'making people do 'bad' things against their will'
,
persists.

Actually Hypnotherapy can be usefully defined as:

'Helping people to do 'good things' against their will!'

- as it is simply a way of calling upon
the power of our 'unconscious mind'
to affect 'automatic' change.

The truth is, that if 'hypnotists'
really could get people
to rob banks
and steal money on their behalf,
the unscrupulous would have exploited this power for evil
rather than for good!

In truth, hypnosis requires 'compliance and acceptance,'
and even on stage, in a 'Hypnotic Show',
the 'clients' accept the context,
and 'play along with it'.

Indeed, no 'Hypnotist' to this day,
no matter how 'supposedly powerful'
has hypnotised an entire audience!

No!

The 'Stage Hypnoptists'
who maintain and promote this mythology of 'absolute power'
actually work
with the most 'compliant' of 'volunteers'.

They demonstrate their 'incredible powers,
with the most highly 'suggestible' and 'willing audience members'.
