Old Style Domination Power 1950's
Interestingly enough, this is a reversal of many of the images of 'dominance'
that pervade this era
- the 1950's - 1960's
- in text books about hypnosis.
Usually, it is the 'male' who is portrayed
as the 'all-powerful' hypnotist,
controlling or exerting an inflence over his subject.
Here, however, the 'female figure' is clearly in control.
She is inducing 'trance' - an 'altered state of awareness.'
And she is using a 'device' - a hypnosis inducing wheel.
Clearly then, this belongs to an era when 'hypnosis'
became more readily accepted in popular culture.
'Hypnosis' was a state of mind that could be attained by anyone!
It was 'open to all'
- through self-hypnosis tapes,
through 'self-help' books
and through the kind of 'mind-focus' techniques
being portrayed in this photograph.
It was the beginning of
an 'acceptance of the innate value of the hypnotic state of mind.'
A 'new way of thinking' that had benefits for everyone.
A way of utilising one's mental prowess and capability,
for one's own good.
The dawn of an era of
'personal self-mastery!'
