Hypnosis is Natural.

A More Detailed Explanation

Light and short states of hypnosis occur throughout the day; we know these as ‘daydreaming,’ ‘being preoccupied’ or ‘drifting off’ into our own ‘thought-world’.

We have all had that momentary realisation, when ‘staring into space’, that we have been inadvertently ‘staring at’ a fellow traveller on the train or bus! ‘Looking straight through them’, as it were!

‘You are aware of what is going on around you but you are focussing on something more immediately important to you, inside. The focus is internal, and you are temporarily unconcerned about external factors.’

Hypnosis is, therefore, more fully defined as:- ‘an altered state of consciousness, which by-passes the critical faculties.’

The feeling of being hypnotised is very similar to ‘our first moment of waking from a deep sleep’, when we are ‘aware, but not fully alert’; cognisant of what is happening around us, but still too comfortable to be bothered to stir!

Indeed, we can all recall times when we have been deeply absorbed reading a book or fully immersed watching a film. – So much so that other happenings around us, and other more mundane thoughts, previously on our minds, seem to get switched off, for a while.’

This state of absolute absorption is quite natural and comfortable and when utilised in therapy it opens up alternative pathways of thought between the conscious, subconscious and unconscious minds, and between the left and right hemispheres of the brain.

‘Hypnosis is a state of mind, enhanced by mental and physical relaxation, in which our subconscious is able to communicate with our conscious mind.’

It is widely accepted now, as an exceptional technique for making the most of our inner potential.

It is this ‘natural, restful state’ that the therapist helps the client to ‘replicate, extend and utilise, as a powerful agent of self-healing.’

‘Healing by trance state’ (or an altered state of awareness), is among the oldest phenomena known to man, and is found, in one form or another, in virtually every culture throughout the world.

It could, legitimately be described, as the original psychological therapy.
